Marrakesh is a city that rewards the curious driver. While the medina itself is best explored on foot, the roads leading out of the city open up some of North Africa's most spectacular landscapes.

Getting Around the City

The main arteries — Avenue Mohammed V, Avenue Hassan II, and the Guéliz district — are straightforward by car. Traffic can be dense during morning and evening rushes, but outside those hours, driving is pleasant. The modern Ville Nouvelle is laid out on a grid and easy to navigate.

Heading to the Atlas Mountains

The N9 south toward Ouarzazate is one of Morocco's legendary drives. The Tizi n'Tichka pass climbs to 2,260m, with sweeping switchbacks and panoramic valleys. Allow 4–5 hours for the full run.

For a shorter escape, the Ourika Valley is just 45 minutes southeast of Marrakesh. The road follows the Ourika River through Berber villages, ending at the Setti Fatma waterfalls.

Desert Routes

The road to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes is a full-day commitment but absolutely worth it. We recommend the overnight route via the Dadès Gorges — stop at Skoura for the palm groves, then push through the Todra Gorges before the final desert stretch.

Essaouira Day Trip

The A7 motorway connects Marrakesh to the Atlantic coast town of Essaouira in under 2.5 hours. The road is modern, well-maintained, and toll-free for most of its length. Essaouira's Portuguese ramparts, fresh seafood, and ocean breeze make it the perfect counterpoint to Marrakesh's intensity.
